Man hurt in blast that leveled Texas house is dead

LEWISVILLE, Texas (AP) ? A man injured in an explosion that leveled a North Texas home that is part of an affordable housing program has died at a hospital.

Christian Community Action president and CEO Ron Batts says 55-year-old Scott Deahl died Sunday night. Batts' nonprofit group owns the home and rents it out to families who are struggling financially.

Deahl lived at the home in Lewisville, about 20 miles northwest of Dallas.

Two firefighters who were standing on the street near the home were also injured in Friday's explosion. One was hospitalized with chest pains and expected to recover; the other was treated and released that day.

Authorities are trying to determine what caused the blast inside the home. Firefighters initially went to the home that morning after a gas leak was reported.

Drinking Coffee All the Time: Coffee & Life: It's 2013: Make Your ...

Only a couple of weeks into the New Year, and we are still hoping for the best. Resolutions---both documented and unacknowledged---drive us to achieve our goals and make good on the annual quest to have a ?happy, healthy (new) year.?

When I woke up this morning, I was still fatigued despite 8 hours of sleep, eating healthy food and daily exercise. I just wasn?t feeling like myself. Immediately I thought, ?Time to get that flu shot, for myself and everyone else.? It?s that time of year---and the flu has been especially difficult this year. In fact, the CDC reported that there were 22,049 cases of flu between September and the end of December 2012, compared with only 849 during the same period in 2011---and the pace and intensity have continued.

So in order to kick-start my engine, I brewed not one, but two pots of coffee, starting first with Seattle?s Best Breakfast Blend, and then moving onto Allegra Espresso Coffee Blend. I added a bit of skim milk and allowed the hot, antioxidant-laden beverage to wake me up, nourish me and energize me. By 11:30, things were definitely looking up!

The day was foggy and overcast, with bits of mist floating around. Still, I got out and walked about 3 miles, stopping for a latte at Starbucks. The sky was undeniably gray, but as I walked, I felt calm and invigorated. The wind was just cool enough to chafe and the forward movement was easy. Coffee opened the door, and I walked through.

When it?s comes to being happy and healthy, coffee is the answer. Two new studies attest to its efficacy in both areas. ?The first study, conducted by the National Institutes of Health, focused on people between 50 and 71. Among more than 250,000 people studied, those who consumed sugary beverages were 30% more likely to be depressed, while those who drank at least 4 cups of coffee were 10% less likely to be depressed.

Data from another study, first published in December 2012 in the American Journal of Epidemiology, looked at the effect of drinking coffee on the risk of developing oral cancers. The American Cancer Society funded this study, which included approximately 1 million people. The researchers found that people who drank 4 cups of coffee per day or more decreased their risk of oral cancer by about half.? These results are a big deal, especially considering that 35,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with an oral cancer each year, and almost 7,000 end up dying.

So while I am not counting on coffee to protect me from the flu, I am counting on coffee to give me the energy to head to the doctor for a flu shot. I also appreciate its ability to decrease my risk of depression, Parkinson?s disease, Alzheimer?s disease, liver cancer, diabetes and stroke.

So stay happy, stay healthy---and drink coffee. Keep moving towards your resolutions. Cheers!

Apple stock wilts on worries about iPhone demand

Apple's stock slipped below $500 for the first time in 11 months on Monday as investors reacted to reports signaling the company's latest iPhone is falling further behind a slew of sleek alternatives running Google's Android software.

The latest indication that Apple, the world's most valuable company, is seeing sluggish demand for its iPhone 5 emerged in separate stories published Monday in the Japanese newspaper Nikkei and The Wall Street Journal. Both publications cited unnamed people familiar with the situation saying Apple has dramatically reduced its orders for the parts needed to build the newest iPhone because the device isn't selling as well as the company hoped.

The adjustment means Apple will buy about half as many display screens for the iPhone as management originally planned for the opening three months of the year, according to the newspapers.

Apple Inc., which is based in Cupertino, Calif., declined to comment Monday. Spokeswoman Natalie Kerris said Apple executives would share their views on market conditions Jan. 23 when the company is scheduled to release its financial results for the final three months of 2011. The period covers the first full quarter that the iPhone 5 was on sale.

Although Apple hailed the iPhone 5 as the best version yet of a product that has revolutionized the telecommunications and computing industry, the company's stock has wilted since the device hit the market.

After peaking at $702.41 on the day of the iPhone 5's Sept. 21 release, Apple's stock has plunged nearly 30 percent. The shares fell $18.55, or 3.6 percent, to close Monday's regular trading at $501.75, dragging the company's market value nearly $190 billion below where it stood in late September. The stock traded at $498.51 earlier in the day, its lowest price since February.

The stock's decline hasn't been entirely caused by concerns about the iPhone 5's sales performance. Industry analysts are also worried about the recent introduction of a smaller, less expensive iPad cutting into the company's profits.

But the biggest fears hover around the iPhone because it has become Apple's most valuable product since the company's late CEO, Steve Jobs, unveiled the first model in 2007. Apple has sold more than 271 million of the devices since then, and in the company's last fiscal year ending in September, the iPhone generated $80 billion in sales to account for more than half of the company's total revenue.

But Apple's upgrades of the iPhone in the past two years have disappointed gadget lovers who have been clamoring for Apple to do more to stay in front of device makers relying on the free Android software made by Google Inc. For instance, there were high hopes for a larger iPhone screen with the release of the 2011 model, but Apple waited until last September to take that leap. And when Apple moved to a larger display screen with the iPhone 5, it didn't include a special chip to enable users to make mobile payments by tapping the handset on another device at the checkout stand. Such a mobile payment feature is available on some Android phones.

Finally, Apple has insisted that wireless carriers subsidize so much of the iPhone's cost in exchange for customers' two-year commitments on data plans that the carriers make little or no money by selling the devices. That has prompted more wireless carriers to tout less expensive Android phones in their stores, undercutting the demand for iPhones, said Darren Hayes, who has been studying the shifting market conditions as chairman of the computing systems program at Pace University in New York.

Through the third quarter of last year, Android devices represented 75 percent of smartphone shipments worldwide according to the research firm International Data Corp. That was up from 58 percent at the same point 2011. Meanwhile, Apple's share of worldwide smartphone shipments has fallen from a peak of 23 percent in the fourth quarter of 2011 to 15 percent in the third quarter of last year.

Samsung Electronics, in particular, has been benefiting from the growing popularity of its Android-powered phones, led by its Galaxy S line. The company said Monday that it sold more than 100 million Galaxy S phones in less than three years. It took the iPhone nearly four years to reach that milestone.

"This is a real wake-up call for Apple," Hayes said. "They need to be more flexible in how they do things." Among other things, Hayes thinks Apple may have to reduce the financial burden on wireless carriers selling the iPhone and spend more money advertising the devices, especially with the recent wave of phones running on Microsoft Corp.'s Windows software. Apple's efforts to sell more iPhones to companies also could be short-circuited if Research in Motion Ltd.'s upcoming release of a revamped BlackBerry proves to be a hit. The BlackBerry is due out Jan. 30.

In an attempt to regain its competitive edge, Apple already is considering the release of a less expensive version of the iPhone made of cheaper parts to boost sales in less affluent countries, according to a report last week in The Wall Street Journal. The company so far hasn't commented on that speculation, either. The least expensive iPhone 5 without a wireless contract sells for $649. With the subsidy included with a two-year wireless service contract, the iPhone 5 sells for as little as $199.

Even as it loses ground to Android products, the iPhone remains a solid seller. Some analysts believe Apple sold more than 50 million iPhones in its last quarter ending in December, which would be far the most units that the company has ever shipped during any previous three-month period.

What's more, the iPhone 5 got off to a torrid start in China, where Apple expects to eventually sell more devices than it does in the U.S. Apple said it sold more than two million iPhone 5s in the three days after its debut in China last month.

2004 Ford Mustang GT from North America

Front brake rotors were rusted and warped when car was bought brand-new. Dealer machined the rotors at no cost instead of replacing. A year later rotors were warped again and I had them machined again. This time I'll have to replace them myself.

Steering rack mounts got squeaky after a while - car sounded like an old wooden ship when turning. Fixed myself by lubricating the rack mounting bolts twice. Easy to do when you're a mechanic and have all the tools.

Parking brake cable would freeze on cold winter days (Below -10 C) and not release the brake pads. Will end up driving with parking brake on until it smells. Dealer said it's normal and there was nothing they could do.

I didn't think it was normal.

Ended up pumping the parking brake cable full of grease, which was hard to do and required special equipment and custom-made fittings. Never had the problem again.

Various squeaks and creaks heard from the center console when driving on bumpy roads. Attempted to fix by placing electrical tape between the center console bezel and the panel. Worked partially well. Still squeaks.

These are relatively small issues.

Engine feels unbalanced when revved up beyond 3,000 RPM. Very unpleasant feeling.

Lots of transmission whine inside, very annoying noise.

Driver's seat has no solid surface inside - it's just a rectangular frame stuffed with foam. After 1.5 years started causing back pains over long drives. Ended up fixing myself by installing a metal plate inside.

Cruise control malfunctions: when 'Resume' pressed while the car is in Neutral, engine starts revving up all the way to redline not knowing that the car isn't in gear. Scared me a couple of times.

Stock gear shifter makes very difficult to get into 3rd gear. This is a known problem. I've tried both Steeda Tri-Ax and MGW aftermarket short shifters. Steeda is insanely noisy. MGW much better, but still not completely quiet.

Clutch pedal position too close to driver to allow for the large travel it's designed for.

At the same time gas pedal is placed much farther, and brake somewhere in between.

Took me a long time to get used to this awkward sitting position.

No headrests in the back - can be very dangerous in case of rear-end collision.

Front seat headrests are flimsy and set too far back. Probably won't do any good in a collision.

Winter driving is very tricky even with best snow tires and a limited slip differential installed.

No attachment points anywhere at all: if you find yourself in a ditch or in a situation where you need to be towed - there's nothing to attach the tow rope to without braking or bending the bumpers.

Headlights poorly designed for side illumination - hard to see the turns or side of road at night.

When air flow selector is in the Windshield, or Windshield/Feet position, A/C automatically turns ON. This is a waste of gas most of the year when it's not hot enough to run A/C. If airflow position in a different place, windshield fogs up. I believe there should be a separate A/C button in a properly thought-out design.

BBC legend Jimmy Savile committed at least 214 sex crimes, police ...

Leslie Lee / Getty Images

Iconic British television presenter Jimmy Savile shows off his OBE award after being honored at London's Buckingham Palace on March 21, 1972.

By Alastair Jamieson, NBC News

LONDON -- Former BBC star Jimmy Savile was one of Britain?s ?most prolific? sex offenders, committing at least 214 sex crimes against victims aged as young as 8, police said Friday.

Investigators released a report cataloging more than 50 years of rapes and indecent assaults. It accused the late television and radio host of using his celebrity status to gain access to vulnerable children in hospitals, nightclubs and even a hospice for the terminally ill.

Almost all the allegations have been made since Savile?s death in 2011, even though the offences date back as far as 1955.

The revelations?have triggered a scandal in Britain?and prompted a string of public inquiries into how some allegations were not properly investigated while Savile was alive.

?It is now clear that Savile was hiding in plain sight and using his celebrity status and fundraising activity to gain uncontrolled access to vulnerable people across six decades,? the police-led report said.??For a variety of reasons the vast majority of his victims did not feel they could speak out and it?s apparent that some of the small number who did had their accounts dismissed by those in authority including parents and carers.?

Savile, who raised?an estimated $55 million for charity, achieved fame on BBC shows including "Top of the Pops" and "Jim'll Fix It." In 1990, he was?given a knighthood by Britain's Queen Elizabeth and received a Papal Knighthood at the Vatican.

For 20 years, Jimmy Savile's children's show was a highlight of Saturday night family TV on the BBC. But now, British police say 300 people have come forward with claims that Savile abused them during his 60-year broadcasting career. NBC's Annabel Roberts reports.

The offences span 28 police forces across the U.K. and the scale of his abuse is so vast that the?report included a map?and an index of the alleged locations.

The number of people Savile victimized ?simply beggars belief,? Peter Watt, co-author of the report [PDF link] and director of children?s charity NSPCC?told?ITV News.

?He is without doubt one of the most prolific sex offenders we have ever come across and every number represents a victim that will never get justice now he is dead. But?with this report we can at least show his victims that they have been taken seriously and their suffering has been recognized.?

In total, more than 450 have people have come forward to police with allegations of abuse involving Savile. Most but not all victims have been interviewed and to date 214 criminal offences have been formally recorded. They included?34 rapes or serious sexual assaults, according to the report. The last incident recorded occurred in 2009. His victims ranged in age from 8 to 47.

The report concluded:

?The details provided by the victims of his abuse paint the picture of a mainly opportunistic individual who used his celebrity status as a powerful tool to coerce or control them, preying on the vulnerable or star-struck for his sexual gratification.?Sadly, this type of behavior is not uncommon in any society - sexual abuse, whether in street gangs, though trafficking or within families and institutions, often involves the use of powerful coercion, intimidation and manipulation to exploit the vulnerable."

In a separate development, Britain?s most senior prosecutor apologized to some of the women abused by Savile, revealing that police missed three chances to take him to trial while he was alive.

Keir Starmer, the director of public prosecutions, said police had been "unjustifiably cautious" investigation four allegations involving girls as young as 14 who said they were abused by Savile in the 1970s.

He said he hoped the organization?s internal review would prove to be a "watershed" moment in the handling of child abuse cases.

In a statement,?he said:

"Many people feel that for sexual offences, where it is 'one person's word against another's' and there is no or little scientific or other evidence to support the allegation, no prosecution should be brought. But this is to ignore the reality of many sexual offences which, by their nature, do not usually take place in front of witnesses and result in no meaningful scientific evidence. Taking a cautious approach to all complainants, on the ground that some might be making a false allegation of a sexual offence, can have the consequence that a prosecution for a true complaint may not take place."

Which drink causes depression: coffee or soda? - WBTV 3 News ...

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

If you can't get by without that morning jolt or afternoon pick-me-up from either a cup of coffee or a soda, you could have a caffeine addiction.

"If I don't have a dollar to buy a coke in the vending machine I go directly to these coffee machines and get a cup of coffee," said Christine Nelson.

"I would say there is not a morning goes by that I do not have coffee," added John Carter.

Some of us need refills as the day progresses.

"I keep a pot of coffee on the set," said John.?

"It's out of sight?and throughout the show I continue to drink this coffee."

You might not realize it, but caffeine is the most common mood-altering drug in the world.

"Caffeine is a substitute for an important amino acid that your body makes naturally," said Dr. Rhett Brown the Medical Director of Presbyterian Family Medicine Midtown.

It can make you more alert and keep you from snoozing when you need to stay awake.

"You're going to get a 45 minute to an hour burst of energy," added Dr. Brown.?

Just ask any java junkie how they feel when they don't get their dose.

"John Carter usually feels the wrath," said Christine.

Although it's not bad for your health too much caffeine can borderline on troublesome.

"They can develop problems with anxiety,?they feel like they have to use caffeine to make up for their lack of sleep or to stay focused," said Dr. Brown.

"And so then we end up talking about people who are overdosing on caffeine a little bit."

And drinking coffee is not to the only way to get your?caffeine fix.

"I've never had a cup of coffee in my life," said Al Conklin.

"I've had a silent protest around here for a long time?for the?non coffee drinkers."

"Why does a company supply coffee for everyone who drinks coffee but not Diet Coke, Diet Doctor Pepper, Diet Pepsi?or?Diet Mountain Dew.

It's probably for good reason.

New research from National Institutes of Health in Research Triangle Park in North Carolina claims that sweetened beverages increase the risk of depression in older adults, while coffee slightly lowers the chances.

People who drank more than four cans or cups of soda per day were 30 percent more likely to be depressed than those who did not drink sweetened drinks.

Experts recommend to skip the diet soda and pick up a cup of joe, in moderation of course.

Ex-Detroit mayor's aide testifies about contractor

DETROIT (AP) ? A close aide to former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick testified in federal court Tuesday that looking out for the interests of a contractor was a regular part of his job.

Derrick Miller returned to the witness stand for a second day in Kilpatrick's corruption trial. The ex-mayor already is on parole for a state obstruction of justice conviction.

A prosecutor on Tuesday took Miller through text messages in which contractor Bobby Ferguson knocks his demolition competitors. Kilpatrick's text response was "Cool!"

Kilpatrick, his father, Bernard, and Ferguson are charged with running a criminal enterprise by rigging contracts and taking payoffs.

Miller said he took a trip to Puerto Rico in 2003 with Kilpatrick, Ferguson and then-Detroit water boss Victor Mercado to look at aqueducts. The water department was a source of city work for Ferguson.

Miller testified Monday about delivering bribes to Kilpatrick from another contractor. Miller pleaded guilty to corruption in 2011.

Also Tuesday, a state official said authorities are investigating a $2,000 gift to Kilpatrick from a Chicago pastor.

Prisons spokesman Russ Marlan said Kilpatrick is required to report gifts to his parole officer but made no mention of the December cash. Detroit TV station WJBK showed video of Kilpatrick counting cash from the wire transfer at a Walmart store in Macomb County. Kilpatrick called it a "trivial" matter Tuesday.

Kilpatrick was convicted four years ago of obstruction of justice in Wayne County court. He still owes $800,000 in restitution to the city of Detroit and is on trial on federal corruption charges.

The $2,000 came from Chicago's New Beginnings Church. The Rev. Corey Brooks said Kilpatrick was pleading for help.

Ouya and Kill Screen announce CREATE Game Jam, baits developers with $45,000 in prizes

Excited for OUYA? So are the folks at Kill Screen -- so much so, they've seen fit to host a 10-day competition to coax OUYA compatible game prototypes out of the development community. It's calling the event CREATE, and in addition to drumming up interest for Kickstarter's favorite game console, it aims to celebrate how OUYA and a new generation of indie game developers are making the television an open gaming platform. Starting on January 14th, Kill Screen will start accepting prototype submissions of playable (but not necessarily complete) games. Ten days later, a panel of indie veterans will cull the fat, and select finalists based on not only the game itself, but the social media efforts of its development team. This is an indie game competition, after all. The contest judges entrants on how effectively they use the OUYA platform too, including processor, sound, controller integration, in-game payments and other elements available in the console's development kit. Winners can score anywhere between $5,000 to $20,000 in prizes, with an extra bonus if the finished game launches on OUYA. Enough incentive for you? Check out Kill Screen's full contest rules at the source link below.

Speaking Briefly on Long Subjects - Fiction Writers Review

Steven SchwartzSteven Schwartz has a lot of fiction history under his belt?almost three decades? worth?and it shows in the stories of his latest work, a collection called Little Raw Souls from the up-and-coming Pittsburgh-based indie press Autumn House. The narrating voices of the collection, whether first person or third, do not observe the world with the surprised uncertainty of the self-discovering ingenue. Instead they tend to discover trouble in familiar settings, often brought on by small but consequential changes in equilibrium.

In ?Meeting Miles,? a man who had a teenage crush on his cousin learns decades later that she has undergone a sex change. In ?Stranger,? a woman who falls asleep at an airport is less concerned that her wallet has been stolen than that the man who did it kissed her on the cheek. In ?Opposite Ends of the World,? a man calls his whole life into question when his neighbors complain about his barking dogs.

Not every story follows this pattern; ?Absolute Zero,? about a teenage would-be Marine with a dying mother, is one of the best stories I?ve read in this young century, and its changes in equilibrium are far from small. But the collection overall digs into those unexpected, tantalizing moments when we humans consider the possibility that the narratives we make of our lives to not cohere in precisely the way we think they do. Some other story is going on as well, and Little Raw Souls delves fruitfully into those tales. It?s a rich, rewarding read that left me feeling all too susceptible to such moments of realization in my own life?a not entirely comfortable feeling, but precisely the one that has always drawn me to literature.

Schwartz teaches in the residential MFA program at Colorado State University and the low-residency MFA program at Warren Wilson College. Recently, he has become fiction editor at Colorado Review. He has also written, for Fiction Writers Review, a 2010 essay on ?Finding?and Losing?Memories in Fiction? that we hope you?ll check out.

Interview

Steven Wingate: Your characters have the raw quality that your title suggests; they are vulnerable, stuck, feeling out of viable options, and perfectly ripe for changes they can?t expect. At what point in the process did you know you were writing about these raw souls? Did the theme announce itself to you and the stories follow, or did the stories build toward the theme by accretion?

Steven Schwartz: When I first came across the phrase ?little raw souls? in an Ann Carson poem, albeit used in a different context, I sat straight up, knowing it was to be the book?s title. The description summarized a preoccupation of mine about what happens when characters lose their illusions and have to find some way to endure or not. Most of the stories in the collection include some sort of precipitating event that forces the characters to act: a robbery, a terminal illness, a car accident, an unexpected birth?even a mundane complaint about a dog barking. But what?s often driving the characters is the past. Although it may be distant for them, something happens that causes it to become raw all over again.? As a writer, you try to create those circumstances, those events and actions that will bring the past to the fore.

The word ?little? in your title throws me a bit, maybe because I?m used to thinking about the soul as something broad and connected to the infinite. What is it about your characters that makes their souls ?little?? Is this a word they would use to describe themselves?

Little Raw SoulsIt?s hard for me to think about the short story without the word ?little? attached to it. I don?t mean this as a diminishment. The short story has always been about the little person?s struggles?whether they be the grieving parents in Raymond Carver?s ?A Small Good Thing? coping with a harassing baker during the dying of their child, or the poor clerk, Akaky Akakievich, in Gogol?s ?The Overcoat,? trying in his crushed existence to hold onto his one prized possession. Characters who populate short stories generally have less grand schemes to plot than private and uncelebrated troubles to manage. Also, ?little? as a modifier suggests childlike for me. When people find themselves in extreme circumstances, as many of my characters do, they often discover a renewed innocence. Rather than being defeated, I think one can experience a quiet direction, which you might call a soul?s clarity?if such an entity exists.

Little Raw Souls?is a story collection, which tips the balance of your body of work ever so slightly in the direction of short fiction (three titles) over novels (two). Can you talk about your relationship with each form?

Generally speaking novels are beasts; short stories strokable creatures. I didn?t write a novel until I was in my forties. Stories were my first love that I left for bigger ambitions and when those bigger ambitions?the third and fourth novels?didn?t pan out I returned contritely to the form and fell in love all over again. I used to believe I needed to save everything for a novel. Such a good line or situation! Surely I can have some character say or do that in a novel! But I slowly came to understand what I probably knew all along: there are simply subjects better suited to the short story.

I?ve heard a lot of definitions, and attempts, to define the diversity of the short story, but my favorite is Chekhov?s: speaking briefly on long subjects. Any good story will offer something long in reflection. In a short story, too, you can?t dwell while winding up or winding down as you can in a novel. Getting to and sustaining the story?s intensity?that vital nexus of character, conflict, and voice?becomes paramount. So I spend a lot of time looking at the first five pages of a draft, swallowing hard, and then cutting them and discovering the real start of the story on page six. Of course, a novel takes massive editing too, but with a story I?m always gauging its heat, as if I might pass my hand over top and feel when it goes cold and then know I have a weak spot. Unlike with a novel, I can keep an entire short story in my head. It works by exclusion, culling the unessential, whereas the novel functions by inclusion, sucking in research, stray comments, family stories, lovers, real and the imagined, like a central vac system.

Your first book, the story collection? To Leningrad in Winter, came out from a university press in 1985. You?ve worked with big houses like William Morrow, and now you?re with Autumn House, a relatively young press that?s establishing a strong reputation. What has changed, from your perspective, about the publishing end of the literary life in those intervening years?

to-leningrad-in-winterI?ve run the gamut, no doubt about it. There are advantages (and disadvantages) to each type of publisher. University presses generally are concerned about equal treatment. Perhaps because of their academic mission they want every book to be fairly represented on their list. The major presses, with their commercial considerations, have no such concern about equal attention. They?ll give priority to whatever will do well, that is, sell. A writer, especially a midlist or literary author, can get lost in such a system. On the other hand, nothing can match the distribution and marketing savvy of a large house, especially if it smiles favorably on you. And often these publishers get preferential treatment from the media for reviews, etc.

Meanwhile the smaller presses, like the one I?m with now, though they can?t compete with the distribution or promotion?there simply isn?t the budget?do offer a writer extraordinary personal attention. I get calls and emails back from Autumn House in record time, and boy does that make you feel wanted. Let?s not forget, too, that some of the recent high-profile prizes, the National Book Award, the Pulitzer Prize, and the National Book Critics Circle Award, have gone to books from small presses, Lord of Misrule, Tinkers, and Binocular Vision, respectively.

What levels the playing field of course (and challenges the traditional gatekeepers of publishing) is the Internet and social media. Newspapers, as everyone knows, have shrunk or abandoned their book pages. The online media to a degree has picked up the slack or even expanded the coverage. Yet there?s one caveat: whereas your review in a newspaper might have been an imprimatur for your book to thousands of general readers, a blog will often have a niche audience. There may be more outlets but they?re fractional. So you spend a lot of time, as I have, trying to figure out who the hell is interested in your work, because frankly the burden of publicizing a book whether you?re with a big or small house is now on the author.

Whenever I see a character who?s a writer, my antennae perk up for the possibility of autobiography. You?ve got one in ?Galisteo Street??an intriguingly self-limiting man who ?would die neither defeated nor miserable, just with his wings voluntarily clipped.? Is there any autobiography in that story, or do you have a relationship with this character that?s discernibly unique?

I remember in graduate school being informed it was a bad idea to make your main character a writer. Never mind John Irving?s Garp, Phillip Roth?s Nathan Zuckerman, or Kerouac?s Sal Paradise. Still, I followed the advice, feeling perhaps that writing about a writer indicated a lack of imagination. That said, there comes a time when you can?t ignore, especially if you?ve been writing for so long, an essential aspect of your life. Especially, too, when that element has so much to do with what for me often drives my characters: success?or their lack of it. Writers anguish privately over why some other writer instead of them has gotten more recognition. I was speaking to my son the other day, who?s waiting anxiously to hear about an acceptance to a college program. We were laughing over how writers are always waiting to hear about some acceptance (but more likely rejection). He wondered how I could stand it. That?s a good question. After a while you just decide this is your fate and you deal with it.

A Good Doctor's SonI?ve certainly considered at critical moments?when trying to start something from scratch; or feeling defeated because a book didn?t do well; or believing you?ve said all you have to say (witness Phillip Roth throwing in the towel recently)?giving up myself. I know few writers who haven?t contemplated how much happier they might be without writing, only to decide like me they have no idea what would replace the intensity and focus writing gives our lives. In my character Ben?s case in ?Galisteo Street,? with his ?wings voluntarily clipped,? he?s had his shot not just at success but its inflated cousin?fame, which didn?t come through, and he still can?t get over that disappointment. But the real conflict for him is about his estranged daughter, and now new granddaughter, and how he seems to believe?and this is often the dilemma for writers or any artists?he?s missed out on real life by pursuing his literary ambitions.

The narrator of the final story, ?The Theory of Everything,? struck me as different from the others. He?s able to call things as he sees them more clearly and directly than some of your other narrators, who can get hung up in how they think things should be. Is this just because he?s older than the others, or is there some specific trait that allows him this clarity?

Partly it?s age, partly generational. This story came out of a visit I made to interview a man who served in World War II and faced a German firing squad.? He survived?a story in itself?but what came to interest me was that this man and his wife in their eighties were raising their grandchildren. I wanted to interview him because of his dramatic war experiences but discovered the real story, because of how it tied into issues in my own family when I was growing up, was his quieter, domestic heroism. You often think you know what you?re writing about until the anticipated subject slips away faster than a yanked tablecloth. It?s hard to create a truly heroic figure, because most characters frankly are flawed. But I knew in this case I had someone who had the stamina for which his generation is reputed and the clarity, to use your word, to know what was right to do. Ironically, the dramatic details of surviving the firing squad never made it into the story, though I tried. Rather, I found out that they were those invisible notes that inform the writer but have no place in the final story.

Sometimes I feel, long after I?m done writing my characters, that I?d like to meet them by chance and check in with them the way I would with an old acquaintance. Just see how they?re doing, figure out if they have another story to tell me. Does anybody from Little Raw Souls stick with you in that way?

lives-of-the-fathersI find that true both as a reader and writer. A character pops up spontaneously to say hi or nudge you. I suppose this is what sequels are for, or those ?persona? characters who appear in one book and return in another years later with more to say. Rabbit Angstrom, Updike?s guy, goes through every life stage possible. I do think most writers keep a character in the wings?a recent example would be Junot Diaz?s Yunior?and these characters won?t quit you unless you kill them off.? In truth, it?s often the voice associated with a particular character that motivates more development. Plugging into that voice through the character makes for a fluency that is hard to give up. I have a character in this new collection, David, who appears in the story ?Seeing Miles,? and has been in stories from my previous collection, Lives of the Fathers.? His background may be inconsistent over time, but he?ll occasionally resurface, grab my attention, and play out a further episode of his life in the same voice as years earlier.

In Little Raw Souls, I am curious what happens to the young man in ?Absolute Zero? who loses his mother to cancer. Does he in fact, as he wishes, join the Marines and survive combat? I also think about the retired highway inspector in ?Bless Everybody? who can?t bear to acknowledge how much he wants to reconcile with his ex-wife until he gets mugged. I wouldn?t mind knowing whether the couple desperate for a child in ?Opposite Ends of the World,? but deterred by the husband?s multiple sclerosis, actually gets their wish. Mostly, though, you let characters live out their lives off the page. Sometimes they do return, but they?re often so changed in their new roles that you don?t recognize them at first until they?ve come and gone.

Money, Euros, Dineros: What Every Small Business Needs to Know ...

We live in a smaller world than the generations that came before us. Connecting with people thousands of miles away is? much easier than it?s ever been. As a result, small businesses are running international operations with little more than an Internet connection and a desire to reach customers around the world. On one hand, you now have the opportunity to sell your services to people all over the world, or see your products in the hands of people who may not even speak your language. On the other hand, you suddenly have brand new headaches, like foreign currency conversions.

When parties with two different nationalities do business, you have the added difficulty of dealing in two currencies. One or both parties have to perform currency conversions as a part of business transaction. If this becomes a regular part of your business, knowing a few handy tips can make the process much easier.

As unbelievable as it sounds, many small business owners don?t realize how much currency conversions can fluctuate over time. They think that once they?ve got the conversion rate between two currencies, that?s that. The truth is that when you do business overseas, you learn that conversion rates are relative. Rates can literally change overnight based on anything from political trends to public debt.

If you want to do business in multiple currencies, you need a keen eye on the markets you?re doing business in. Check rates daily in each market you?re affected by. Pay attention to what?s going on with those countries so you understand how and why the fluctuations occur when they do.

Working in foreign currencies means finding a convenient and trustworthy foreign exchange (forex) broker. Forex brokers work with multiple currencies, offering competitive exchange rates. One broker may work within several currencies or specialize in just converting one particular currency to another. There are a number of options out there and with a little research you can find the one for you.

But one option you may want to skip is using your bank to make international conversions frequently. Banks have notoriously bad exchange rates. You can certainly find a better rate by researching your forex broker options and choosing one with competitive rates.

The best way to deal with foreign money conversions is to avoid the conversion altogether. Ask your clients or customers to pay you in your own currency instead of theirs. For example, if you sell your products or services online, you would only take American dollars, placing the burden of conversion on the buyer. If you?re dealing with a supplier, you might make a deal directly with your contact there to be make payments in your own currency.

Sticking to your own currency makes it easier to understand exactly what you?re receiving without worrying about the price of tea in China. How well this strategy works depends on who you?re doing business with and how flexible they can be. You?ll always fare better if your product or service is in high demand.

Important factor in fat storage and energy metabolism

Jan. 6, 2013 ? As part of their ongoing research on the physiologic factors that contribute to the development of obesity, Joslin Diabetes Center scientists have identified a cell cycle transcriptional co-regulator -- TRIP-Br2 -- that plays a major role in energy metabolism and fat storage. This finding has the potential to lead to new treatments for obesity. The study is being published January 6 ahead of print by Nature Medicine.

Transcriptional co-regulators manage the expression of DNA, either by activating or suppressing the expression of genes. TRIP-Br2 regulates metabolic genes involved in fat storage and energy metabolism. Joslin scientists are actively involved in studying the regulation of the many factors that control the storage, mobilization and utilization of excess energy in adipocytes (fat cells).

The scientists looked at TRIP-Br2 levels in mice fed a low-fat diet and a high-fat diet as well as obese mice: the mice on the high-fat diet and the obese mice had higher levels of TRIP-Br2 in their fat tissue. They also found that TRIP-Br2 is significantly elevated in the visceral fat (the fat that accumulates around the middle of the body which has more harmful effects than fat in other areas of the body) of obese people, especially those who store fat mostly in that area.

To illuminate the physiological role of TRIP-Br2 on fat storage and metabolism, the scientists conducted experiments on mice genetically engineered not to produce TRIP-Br2, known as KO (knock out) mice, which were fed either a low-fat diet or a high-fat diet. The KO mice on the high-fat diet showed little change in their body weights, which were similar to the KO mice on the low-fat diet. The KO mice had higher energy expenditure due to increased heat production and increased oxygen consumption. In addition, the KO mice on the high-fat diet had improved glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity and lower triglycerides.

When TRIP-Br2 is suppressed, the expression of hormone sensitive lipase (HSL) and Beta3-adrenergic (Adrb3) receptors, which are involved in fat breakdown (lipolysis), is significantly enhanced in fat tissue. When TRIP-Br2 is elevated by obesity and a high-fat diet, it suppresses HSL and Adrb3 receptors resulting in a decrease in energy expenditure and an increase in fat accumulation.

"TRIP-Br2 is important for the accumulation of fat," says lead author Rohit N. Kulkarni, M.D., Ph.D., Principal Investigator in the Section on Islet Cell and Regenerative Biology and Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. "When an animal lacks TRIP-Br2, it can't accumulate fat."

TRIP-Br2 modulates fat storage by simultaneously regulating lipolysis, energy output and oxidative metabolism -- which work together as complementary processes. "This is the first study to identify a cell cycle transcriptional co-regulator that controls these processes. TRIP-Br2 appears to have a different mechanism of action than transcriptional co-regulators reported in previous studies," says Dr. Kulkarni.

TRIP-Br2 is a potential therapeutic target to treat obesity and its related complications, including insulin resistance. The Joslin scientists are currently investigating ways to "reduce TRIP-Br2 in visceral fat, which would allow enhanced expression of HSL and Adrb3 receptors. The ability to modify these two molecules offers a new pathway for combating obesity," says Dr. Kulkarni.

Dr. Kulkarni and his colleagues are also investigating whether the suppression of TRIP-Br2 and the resulting resistance to obesity have an impact on the development of cardiovascular disease and metabolic complications.

This study was funded in part by Graetz Bridge Funds and the National Institutes of Health. The human studies were supported by a grant from the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG).

The Kauai Humane Society - Adopt A Pet - Save A Live - Dog, Cat ...

Last month while I was in California, my girlfriend, Preeya, started spending her time off work taking dogs for walks at the Kauai pound. When I got back to the island she took me.

The Kauai Humane Society is leaps-and-bounds better for animals than abusive homes, living on the streets, or any of the other humane societies I?ve visited, but it?s obviously still sad to see the cats and dogs confined to their prison cells. They need caring owners and good homes.

The staff at the Kauai Humane Society is incredible. They are very kind, pay extra attention to the animals ensuring they are paired appropriately, clean, healthy, and released to run the yard as much as possible. The staff even spends extra time training the dogs, helping alleviate bad habits before new owners take them home.

Above: Tyson is a strong and quiet Pit Bull. The photos don?t do this dog justice, his neck and head had huge muscles which was funny because he had soft puppy-dog eyes that begged to get him out of his cage. He?s an awesome dog.

There are lots of big dogs, but also lots of puppies, and little dogs available for adoption. We took a few out to play on the puppy yard and they were ecstatic, whipping around together at what seemed like 100 mph! You could see the dogs smile.

The cat zones were pretty sleepy, and like the rest of the shelter, clean and very well maintained. These guys snoozed while we were there. Not sure how it is in there at night, when cats are most active.

Our friends and landlord who live above us have a rescue cat from the Kauai Humane Society who Preeya and I have quasi-adopted while living here. His name is Macks and he?s one of the coolest cats ever.

Had a great time taking the dogs out and really looking forward to Preeya?s next day off when we get to head back down there. For our next trip we are going to take two dogs to the beach for the day.

The Kauai Humane Society allows you to part-time adopt, foster, and take animals out for day trips. This helps spread the word about the need for pets to be adopted, and gives everyone hope.

With over 7,000 animals admitted to the Kauai Humane Society a year, they could use some help. Can?t imagine what it must be like in a big city. Please adopt if you get pets, chances are you will fall in love.

PM announces renewal of Automotive Innovation Fund

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced the renewal of the Automotive Innovation Fund (AIF), highlighting the strategic importance of the automotive sector to Canada?s economy and job market. The Prime Minister was accompanied by Lisa Raitt, Minister of Labour.

?Our Government remains focussed on creating jobs, growth and long-term prosperity and to keeping Canada?s automotive manufacturing sector globally competitive and innovative,? said Prime Minister Harper. ?The Automotive Innovation Fund has a proven track record of generating results for Canadians in terms of jobs, prosperity and foreign investment in Canada.?

The AIF provides support for leading-edge innovation in automotive manufacturing and research and development (R&D) to build advanced, greener products and processes.

The AIF was first introduced in Budget 2008. To date, investments have leveraged up to $1.6 billion in R&D and innovation investments in Canada?s automotive sector, including promoting enhanced R&D capacity, leading-edge engineering and design, and made-in-Canada innovation. Since AIF?s inception, the following companies have benefitted from the Fund: Ford Motor Company of Canada, Linamar Corporation, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada Inc. and Magna International.

Canada?s automotive industry is a key economic driver, contributing 12 percent of the country?s manufacturing GDP and 12 percent of total merchandise exports. The industry employs approximately 111,000 Canadians directly and another 338,000 indirectly.

FA Cup takes center stage

It?s one of the small inconveniences you accept when you buy into European soccer. Every once in a while, leagues stop for cup competitions that just don?t have the same resonance. Copa del Rey, Coppa Italia, DFB Pokal - they?re all synonyms for ?not an actual league game,? especially at a point in the calendar when unbalanced matches often find the most interesting players on the bench. Some viewers have their fan?s stake in a match, but it?s difficult for most around the world to invest in an FA Cup maelstrom without a more intimate attachment.

That maelstrom takes center stage this weekend, with 32 matches making up the competition?s third round proper (as opposed to those rude qualifying rounds). It?s the point of the competition where Premier League clubs drop in, so while there are a number of Aldershot Town and Rotterdam United fixtures that won?t turn your eyes, there are a few points in intrigue amid the tumult.

Here are a few matches to keep in mind as you search for your fix, and if cup competition in England isn?t your thing, I?ve thrown in some matches from the continent (with Spain, Italy, and Mexico?s leagues all restarting this weekend):

In England ? FA Cup matches to watch

Brighton & Hove Albion vs. Newcastle United (Saturday, 7:30 a.m. Eastern) ? We?re starting to hear questions from Tyneside about Alan Pardew?s suitability for the Toon?s job. While he undoubtedly did well for the Magpies last year, the 2012-13 season?s been a disappointment, with Pardew?s talented (if injured) team only two points from the relegation zone.

On the other bench, Brighton?s Gus Poyet is one of the up-and-coming names in England?s managerial circles. Last year he send Newcastle out of this competition in the fourth round. If he repeats the feat this year, Newcastle owner Mike Ashley should give Poyet Pardew?s seat on the ride back north.

Manchester City vs. Watford (Saturday, 10:00 a.m. Eastern) ? This will only be an good game if Manchester City?s second stringers and kids (the likes of Scott Sinclair, Maicon, Karim Rekik) fall on their faces, but the contrasts in ownership are interesting.

Manchester City is owned by a Sheikh that would build a stadium on a cloud and fly supporters to matches on hovercraft if he could. Watford is essentially the Double A club for Udinese ? a reserve of players for Italian businessman Giampaolo Pozzo.

The only similarity between the teams may be their managers. Both Roberto Mancini (Manchester City) and Gianfranco Zola (Watford, pictured) are former Italian internationals. Mancini was capped 36 times. Zola: 35.

Southampton vs. Chelsea (Saturday, 10:00 a.m. Eastern) ? One of four third round meetings between Premier League clubs, Chelsea?s trip to St. Mary?s only becomes important if they lose. That?s is a real possibility, given some of Chelsea?s recent, inconsistent results (low, high, low).

Swansea City vs. Arsenal (Sunday, 8:30 a.m. Eastern) ? Swansea has a two-match winning streak against Arsenal, including Dec. 1?s 2-0 win at Emirates Stadium. Arsenal?s already bowed out of the League Cup, and with this tough draw, the Gunners could see the early confirmation of another trophy-less season.

Here?s a full list of the weekend?s fixtures.

Elsewhere

Napoli vs. Roma (Sunday, 2:45 p.m. Eastern) ? Zdenek Zeman has Roma clicking, the Giallorossi claiming 24 points in their last 10 games. They?re only two points behind fifth place Napoli for what could be Italy?s final European spot.

Between Roma?s league-leading attack (42 goals in 18 games) and the presence of Edinson Cavani and Marek Hamsik (as well as the absence of suspended defender Paolo Cannavaro), this could turn into a shootout.

Barcelona vs. Espanyol (Sunday, 1:00 p.m. Eastern) - It?s derby day in Catalonia, with Spain?s eventual champions facing an inner-city rival slowly climbing out of the relegation zone. Former Mexican national team coach Javier Aguirre has Espanyol up to 18th after a four-match unbeaten streak, a run that will come to an end on Sunday.

Chivas vs. Toluca (Sunday, 6:00 p.m. Eastern) ? Liga MX starts their Clausura this weekend, but Guadalajara?s already playing to type. The Goats fired head coach John Van?t Schip last night, a move that?d been coming ever since the club parted was with Johan Cruyff (who had been serving as a special advisor). Benjamin Galindo has two days to prepare his new team for a visit from the Apertura?s regular season champions.

Obama Signs $633B Defense Bill

President Barack Obama has signed a $633 billion defense bill for next year that tightens penalties on Iran and bolsters security at diplomatic missions worldwide after the deadly attack in Benghazi, Libya.

Obama had threatened to veto the measure because of a number of concerns, including limits on his authority to transfer terrorist suspects from the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for one year.

But Obama said that although he continued to oppose certain sections of the bill, "the need to renew critical defense authorities and funding was too great to ignore."

The bill includes cuts in defense spending that the president and congressional Republicans agreed to in August 2011, along with the end of the war in Iraq and the drawdown of American forces in Afghanistan.

People watching their weight should pay closer attention to how much alcohol they drink since it is second only to fat in terms of calorie content, say experts.

According to the World Cancer Research Fund, alcohol makes up nearly 10% of total calorie intake among drinkers.

Having a large glass of wine will cost you the same 178 calories as eating two chocolate digestive biscuits.

And it will take you more than a half hour's brisk walk to burn off.

Empty calories

Eating or drinking too many calories on a regular basis can lead to weight gain.

Recent reports have shown that people are unaware of calories in drinks and don't include them when calculating their daily consumption?

Kate MendozaWorld Cancer Research Fund

But unlike food, alcoholic drinks have very little or no nutritional value.

The 'empty calories' in drinks are often forgotten or ignored by dieters, says the WCRF.

Kate Mendoza, head of health information at WCRF, said: "Recent reports have shown that people are unaware of calories in drinks and don't include them when calculating their daily consumption."

Containing 7kcal/g, alcohol is only slightly less calorific than fat, which contains 9kcal/g.

Protein and carbohydrates contain 4kcal/g and fibre 2kcal/g.

Men need around 2,500 calories a day, and women around 2,000.

"Cutting down on drinking can have a big effect on weight loss or maintaining a healthy weight," said Ms Mendoza.

It can also reduce your risk of cancer, she said.

Alcohol has been linked with breast, bowel, mouth and liver cancer.

If you don't want to abstain entirely, there are ways that can help you cut down, including opting for smaller glass sizes, diluting alcohol with soda water or a low-calorie soft drink, alternating between alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and keeping a few nights each week booze-free.

WCRF has produced an?Alcohol Calorie Calculator?for different drinks that shows approximately how much exercise you would need to do to burn off the alcohol calories you consume.

Government guidelines recommend men should not regularly drink more than 3-4 units of alcohol a day, and women should limit themselves to 2-3 units a day.

Facebook security glitch exposes users' New Year's Eve messages

12 hrs.

Whew! Facebook saved countless users from?New Year's Eve humiliation ... after initially exposing their private messages.

Facebook's Midnight Delivery app allows users to schedule private messages to wish friends a happy new year exactly when the clock strikes twelve. This is fantastic for those who intend on having a glass of Champagne or five as 2013 approaches, as it will let them schedule a polite message along the lines of?"Happy New Year, my beloved friends!" instead of drunk texting everyone ?something like?"I'm sooooo wasted right nowljskf and happy NEW YeAr! 2013 FTW! YOLO!" when the ball in Times Square drops.

Now great as Facebook's little app sounds, there was?just one problem: A security glitch temporarily exposed users' scheduled?messages to the general public.

The Next Web's?Robin Wauters reports that?when a user scheduled a Midnight Deliveries?message, he or she was presented with a confirmation page. Unfortunately, that confirmation page could be viewed by anyone who happens to guess its URL. "You couldn?t see who sent the messages," Wauters explains, "but you could see all the intended recipients, and the message itself, if you tweaked the URL the right way."

Those toying around with URLs could also see images which were attached to those scheduled massages. And to add insult to injury, they could also delete the correspondences.

"We are working on a fix for this issue now," a Facebook spokesperson told NBC News via email. "[A]nd in the interim we have disabled this app on the Facebook Stories site to ensure that no messages can be accessed."

Perhaps the more prudent approach, for the time being, is to just plain type out a "Happy New Year!!!!1!!!" text message and send it to everyone in your contacts at midnight.

North African nations take different reform routes

RABAT, Morocco (AP) ? Two years after an itinerant Tunisian fruit-seller set himself on fire to protest government injustice and ignited uprisings across the Middle East, the three nations of the Maghreb ? the former French colonies of North Africa ? have taken vastly different paths. Tunisia has seen wholesale political change. In oil-rich Algeria, it's business as usual. Somewhere in the middle is Morocco, which has trumpeted what it describes as a third way of controlled change as a model for the region.

These outcomes sum up much of the Middle East's disparate reactions to the Arab Spring ? and their success or failure may hold lessons for the whole region.

Morocco and Algeria seem remarkably stable, despite the social tensions boiling beneath their calm facade. Resource-strapped Tunisia seems to have fared poorly, with a struggling economy and dire predictions of chaos. Yet it's also the country that has made the most progress toward a more open society.

MOROCCO:

On the surface, Morocco seems to be the Maghreb nation that has fared the best in the Arab Spring, with massive protests by the pro-democracy February 20th youth movement bringing a swift promise by the king to reform the constitution, devolving more powers to elected officials. A referendum on the amended constitution was approved by 98 percent of the people and in early elections, a moderate Islamist party long in the opposition won the right to head the new governing coalition.

Abdelilah Benkirane of the Justice and Development Party became the strongest prime minister in decades and promised to root out corruption, while working to help the country's most needy.

"Our government is working in cooperation with the other institutions under the leadership of his majesty," Communication Minister Mustapha Khalfi told The Associated Press. "It's what we call a gradual reform with stability, a third path between revolution and the old way of governing."

Yet on Nov. 18, in Morocco's capital Rabat, a few dozen activists attempted to rally in front of the parliament to protest the king's $300 million personal budget, one of the largest for a monarchy in the world and a serious burden for the struggling economy.

Even before the protesters could gather, they were set upon by club wielding riot police and chased through the elegant art-deco streets of the capital. Yet, just a week earlier, thousands had been allowed to protest against the prime minister. Despite a new constitution and promises of reform, the hereditary monarchy ruling this nation of 32 million for the last 350 years remains in charge and above criticism.

None other than the king's first cousin, Prince Moulay Hisham, now a professor at Stanford, disputes the monarch's vision of Morocco finding the middle path to reform.

In a recent interview with France 24 news channel, he argued that the monarchy only changed the constitution under heavy pressure from the pro-democracy demonstrations and as the movement faltered, so did reform.

"In the absence of true, strong democratic force to carry on the project and guarantee that it was a stage and not a final step, the spirit of the new constitution has been frozen," he said.

After the elections, demonstrations petered out and a year and a half after the constitution was passed, most of its amendments have yet to be implemented.

Abadila Maaelaynine, an activist with February 20, said the economy and social inequalities haven't improved, and there are still daily human rights violations, especially against demonstrations.

"So the promise of real change on the ground is not yet there."

ALGERIA:

The energy giant has been referred to as the exception to the Arab Spring. Early protests calling for reform fizzled and were quickly repressed by highly vigilant security forces. While President Abdelaziz Bouteflika went on to promise a host of reforms, including in the laws governing the media and political parties, little has been achieved over the past two years.

Dozens of new parties were legalized but it made little difference in parliamentary elections in May 2012 or November's municipal elections, which were poorly attended and just strengthened the ruling party. For the most part life has returned to the way it was before the Arab Spring.

With its enormous oil and gas reserves, Algeria also has vast financial resources lacking to most Arab Spring countries, allowing it to douse potential unrest with large amounts of cash.

"There was an attempt to buy a social peace ? don't ask political questions and we'll sort out your economic needs," said Algerian sociologist Nasser Djabi. "The government ... played for time and it seems to have worked."

The ruling party has only widened its control over the various elected bodies, and as neighboring Tunisia and Egypt looked more and more unstable, Algeria has come under increasingly less pressure from Europe and the U.S. to reform, he added.

The rise of radical Islamic groups in the Sahara and especially northern Mali has also made Algeria and its powerful military an attractive partner in the war on terror.

Meanwhile, talk of amending the constitution has been shelved for the near future. According to Nourreddine Benissad, head of Algeria's main human rights group, political freedoms are on the wane and the elections have been far from free and transparent.

"It's practically illegal to demonstrate or even gather," he said. "There is no real political will to carry out social, political or economic reforms."

Instead, any change in Algeria is expected to come only in 2014 when President Bouteflika's latest term ends and he is expected to step down. At that point, there should be an opening for a new political generation, and a power struggle between the military and members of the ruling party is expected.

TUNISIA:

Of the three Maghreb countries, the birthplace of the Arab Spring has appeared to be closest to the brink of violence and even a new uprising. Over the past few weeks, there has been a rising confrontation between the main labor union and the moderate Islamist party that won elections after the overthrow of the dictator.

There were days of rioting in one regional city that nearly culminated in a nationwide general strike on Dec. 13, which had been expected to degenerate into further violence until the two sides negotiated a last minute compromise.

Tunisia, a largely middle class republic of 10 million, was once one of the most repressive police states in the region under the 23-year rule of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, until his overthrow in January 2011.

After a relatively rocky transition, Tunisians surged to the polls in record numbers on Oct. 23 and gave the most votes to Ennahda, a moderate Islamist party that had been an implacable foe of the old regime. The Islamists went on to form a coalition with two other secular parties and promised democracy and jobs.

A year later, political tensions have soared to new heights. There is constant talk that the coalition is set to fracture; disaffected youths demanding jobs riot in town after town; and radical Islamism is on the rise.

Ghazi Gheriari, a political analyst at Tunis University, said the post-election period marking the second phase of Tunisia's transition ? while having more popular legitimacy ? has been marked by less consensus and more bickering.

There has also been the rise of an aggressive ultraconservative Islamist movement known as Salafism that has increasingly resorted to violence. "With the new government, Tunisia is seeing more tension and problems with freedoms," said Gheriari.

Part of the problem is that political opposition in the elected assembly has been weak, with little real support in the population, meaning it presents little effective counterweight to the ruling coalition.

Instead, the real opposition has been the unions and civil associations that have stood up to the government over issues such as putting references to Islamic law in the new constitution and describing women, in one clause, as complementary rather than equal to men. In both cases, the Islamist government backed down.

This, in fact, has been perhaps the redeeming hallmark of Tunisia's transition: Even amid periodic riots, political crises and standoffs, the tension has always been defused and a compromise reached between the feuding parties. That contrasts with Egypt, where each side seems at every stage to be ready to carry their stand over the brink and into violence.

The ability to achieve agreement amid searing acrimony may be what saves Tunisia's experiment in democracy.

Kamel Labidi, a long time campaigner for human rights and freedom of expression, attributes this strength partly to high education levels and the military's historical lack of a role in the country ? as well as the presence of a labor movement to balance out the Islamists.

"The Islamists understood it was in their interest to make concessions," he said.
